Afghanistan Beyond the Headlines: Women, Youth, and the War

News coverage of Afghanistan has focused almost entirely on the war, leaving much of the country’s population—particularly women and girls—out of the headlines. The news isn’t good: Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world; girls on their way to school risk being assaulted; and youth face persistent low-level violence in cities and the countryside. Bringing together experts from a diversity of disciplines and policy areas, this half-day conference will examine how women and youth have fared during a decade of conflict, and the challenges and opportunities that they face in Afghanistan's uncertain future. more

Vision, Innovation, and Action to Address Child Marriage

Over the past decade, nearly 58 million girls were married before the age of 18. Child marriage is a truly global problem: In Africa, 42 percent of girls are married before turning 18, but it is also prevalent in parts of Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean (in South Asia, for instance, 46 percent of girls are married). Child brides often start childbearing early, leading to complications and producing high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality among girls in developing countries. Married girls are often forced to leave school, negatively affecting their ability to work and provide for their families. The panelists will describe current policies and programs working to support young women and delay marriage whenever possible. more

Ina Merdjanova, former Southeast Europe policy scholar, releases her latest monograph Rediscovering the Umma. "Ina Merdjanova discusses the conditions and role of Islam in relation to post-Ottoman nation-building, the communist period, and post-communist developments in the Balkans, focusing in particular on the remarkable transformations experienced by Muslim communities after the end of the Cold War. Amidst multiple structural and cultural transitions, they sought to renegotiate their place and reclaim their Islamic identities in formally secular legal and normative environments, mostly as minorities in majority-Christian societies." Africa Transformed: How Women and Youth are Leading the Way Through Technology and Innovation

Development on the African continent has gone “high tech.” Using the Internet, mobile devices, and other tools unavailable to previous generations, young people, particularly women, are leading the way in finding innovative ways to unleash technology to solve problems large and small. The Rabat Conference in November 2012 was hosted by the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior in partnership with the Global Women’s Leadership Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the Wellesley Centers for Women with support from Lynn and Bob Johnston. UN Women, UNDP, and the International Republican Institute provided valuable collaboration. Through this compilation of papers based on discussions at the conference, we celebrate the call for women’s centrality in the constitutional making processes and the negotiation processes involved in strengthening the rule of law in the MENA region.

The Global Women’s Leadership Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in partnership with the Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College is delighted to launch Women Leading Lawmaking in China, a critical collection of papers by China’s leading gender and law experts, a network of experts brought together under the auspices of the Ford Foundation, Beijing. This compendium of papers highlights emerging challenges to gender equality in China and is an important contribution to legal research and gender analysis in China and other countries undergoing legal system reform.
