Overview

One of the longest-running internal conflicts in Asia is the struggle by the Muslims of the southern Philippines for autonomy or independence from the Christian majority. This conflict has been given new salience in recent years with the rise of Muslim militancy throughout the Islamic world.

A panel of distinguished experts will examine the Mindanao conflict. Richard Solomon, President of the U.S. Institute of Peace and former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and Ambassador to the Philippines, will deliver opening remarks. Commentators will include Michael Mastura, President, Sultan Kudarat Islamic Academy Foundation; Randolf David, Sociology Department, University of the Philippines; Carolyn Arguillas, Chairperson, Mindanao News and Information Cooperative Center; and Steven Muncy, Executive Director, Community and Family Services International. All of the panelists are traveling from the Philippines to take part in this program, which will follow a daylong conference on the subject in New York on May 25.
