Overview

Street protests against the government of President Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela have died down since the early months of 2014.  But as least 69 protesters remain in custody, including opposition leader Leopoldo López.  In October, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein. expressed  “serious concern” about the López case and added that, “The prolonged and arbitrary detention of political opponents and protestors in Venezuela is causing more and more concern internationally."  The UN working group on arbitrary detentions also spoke out about the arbitrary detentions of López and former San Cristóbal mayor, Daniel Ceballos. Overall, more than 3,300 individuals were detained during the protests this year.  While many were acquitted of charges, approximately 1,800 still have open criminal cases.

The Program provides insightful and actionable research for policymakers, private sector leaders, journalists, and public intellectuals in the United States and Latin America. To bridge the gap between scholarship and policy action, it fosters new inquiry, sponsors high-level public and private meetings among multiple stakeholders, and explores policy options to improve outcomes for citizens throughout the Americas. Drawing on the Wilson Center’s strength as the nation’s key non-partisan policy forum, the Program serves as a trusted source of analysis and a vital point of contact between the worlds of scholarship and action.  Read more
