Violence Against Journalists in Mexico - Defending Democratic Watchdogs

2022 is on track to be the deadliest year on record for journalists in Mexico. According to Reporters Without Borders, Mexico consistently ranks as the most dangerous country to be a journalist outside active war zones. So far this year, eight journalists have been murdered, and nearly 90% of crimes against journalists go unpunished. Critics of President López Obrador have stated that his administration is not doing enough to protect journalists as nearly 50 have been murdered since his 2018 inauguration. Multiple members of the international community including members of the E.U. Parliament and U.S. Congress have publicly expressed concern over violence against journalists in Mexico. This in turn has generated harsh responses from the López Obrador administration.
