The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (“Wilson Center”) seeks a highly collaborative, charismatic executive leader that will serve as the Vice President – External Relations to lead a team of communication professionals in carrying out a mission critical to the Center’s success: effectively projecting knowledge resources to diverse audiences both here in the U.S. and around the world. 

Headquartered in Washington DC, the Wilson Center is created by a congressional statute as the living memorial to President Woodrow Wilson.  It is the leading institution for in-depth research and open dialogue to inform actionable ideas on global issues.  The Wilson Center is ranked #1 in Regional Studies in the world according to the findings from the University of Pennsylvania.

For the Center, the Vice President – External Relations will play a crucial role in “program deliverables”. The Center hosts --virtually, in person, and hybrid-- hundreds of events each year in order to share knowledge and analysis produced by our scholars, fellows, and experts.

The major responsibilities include:

  • Will work closely with the Center’s Director, President and CEO in devising strategies to reach key Center constituencies and make the most of the Center’s external relations funding.
  • Will drive communications strategy for the Center, finding ways to make Center scholarship more timely and relevant for audiences seeing a rapidly changing world.
  • Will be responsible for cultivating good ties with the press, reaching more news organizations, press outlets annually, and expanding the Center’s engagement in social media.
  • Will be responsible to work closely with staff to create and to implement marketing strategies that can help the Center build its resources and appeal.
  • Will have the responsibility to coordinate responses to media requests for information.

Experience and Attributes

  • Ideal candidates for this position must have experience with project and team management to include effective budget oversight.
  • General experience in overseeing sophisticated event logistics, including, but not limited to sourcing and managing speakers and vendors, experience with live virtual event production, and managing the technical components of multiple, high-profile events in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of a hybrid organization and able to articulate the value proposition of the Wilson Center.
  • Extensive executive level communication skills, exceptional writer and excellent listener.
  • Team player with a “can do” attitude, a good sense of humor and professionalism in a fast-paced environment.

Selective Factors

  • Must have authorization to work in the United States.
  • Minimum of seven to ten years executive management experience.
  • Possess the skill to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and to develop recommendations for improvement of internal operations to enhance the overall public education, communications and outreach programs of the Center.
