Full Biography

Cindy I-Fen Cheng is Robinson-Edwards Professor of American History and Asian American Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her doctorate from the University of California, Irvine in 2004 in U.S. History with a graduate emphasis in Feminist Studies and Critical Theory. Before coming to UW-Madison in 2005, she was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Southern California in the Department of American Studies and Ethnicity. She is the award-winning author of Citizens of Asian America: Democracy and Race during the Cold War (NYU Press, 2013) and editor of The Routledge Handbook of Asian American Studies (2016). Her articles have appeared in the American Quarterly and the Journal of Asian American Studies. She is currently working on her new book project on race, immigration, urban poverty, and the growth of California’s skid rows.
