Aristocrats and Kulaks: The Struggle for Authority on a Serf Estate in Central Russia 1800-1835

Project Summary

An exploration of social stratification and communal conflict on an obrok estate, and the unsuccessful attempts of the seignior to resolve the social conflicts and power struggles unleashed by the emergence of a dynamic, market-oriented village economy in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Challenges conventional views of the peasant commune as a focus of communal solidarity and collective action.
