Collections of Russian Folksongs, 19th to 20th Century

Project Summary

Looks at how Russian culture has been tied to the Russian folk tradition. Brings an analysis of Russian music to those outside of the USSR, and addresses the gap of international awareness of Russian folk music by focusing on landmark collections of Russian songs published before 1917, analyzing their contents, and approaches to materials and concepts. Includes an investigation of specific features of Russian folksong and the major concepts found in existing scholarship.
