Between Karafuto and Sakhalin: Remembering when Japan became the USSR, 1945-1948

Project Summary

Focuses on the Soviet occupation of a Japanese colony that marked the final stage of World War II. Examines the history and transformation of japanese Karafuto into the USSR settlemend of Sakhalin. Reconstructs the period through interviews and newly opened archives and examines how Russian and Japanese history have dealt with the episode.
