Full Biography

Michele Rivkin-Fish is Associate Professor of Anthropology at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on reproductive politics and health in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia. She is the author of Women’s Health in Post-Soviet Russia: The Politics of Intervention (2005), which won the Basker Prize for Outstanding Research on Gender and Health from the Society of Medical Anthropology. She is currently finishing a monograph, “Unmaking Russia’s Abortion Culture: Family Planning and the Struggle for a Liberal Biopolitics,” which examines professional efforts to replace routine abortion use with contraceptive habits from the late Soviet 1950s to 2021 in Russia.
