Full Biography

Ricardo G. Fernández is the Superintendent of Banks for the Republic of Panama. He has over thirty years of experience in banking including marketing, corporate credit and banking products management, as well as in the management of banking relations with both corporate clients and financial institutions. During his professional career in banking, he spearheaded the development of new businesses, improving the quality and profitability of business relations and obtaining optimal levels of efficiency and innovation in highly competitive environments. For five years, Fernández worked for Chase Manhattan Bank, where he was responsible for trade and shipping. He structured export promotion programs for financial institutions, the public sector, and corporate clients. He also ran the Transactional Banking Unit for Citibank, N.A. where he was responsible for determining the strategy and positioning of the bank’s transactional banking products and services, making the bank a leader among multinational companies. His strategy in shipping, specifically in credit and marketing for the Panamanian maritime business, made Citibank, N.A. a leader in this market. In addition, he developed and implemented the corporate banking strategy and managed the credit approvals and financial planning for the industries in that portfolio. Fernández has a broad knowledge in diverse topics related to leadership, credit, international commerce, cash management, agencies and trust companies, sales and innovation, and compliance and money laundering. He holds an Associate of Science degree in Biology from the Panama Canal Zone College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the Florida State University.
