Fernando Henrique Cardoso Issues Statement on Temer Corruption Allegations

The solution for our current, grave crisis must be found amid absolute respect for the Constitution. It is necessary to know with greatest possible accuracy the facts that have so profoundly affected our political system and caused such indignation and deception. It is also necessary that the recordings and the basis for the accusations be released publically.

Those implicated by these recordings have a duty to explain themselves and offer their versions of the story to the public. If the defense’s allegations are not convincing—and arguing that more evidence is necessary is insufficient—they will have the moral obligation to facilitate a solution, even by way of resignation. The country asks for prompt action. Not to save anyone or stop investigations.

Prompt action to put into practice economic and social measures that give security, employment, and tranquility to the Brazilian people. And, above all, prompt action to reestablish morality in our institutions and in the conduct of public figures.

The above statement was published by former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso on Facebook and can be viewed in the original Portuguese here.
