The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 60: Happy Birthday?

When, in 1948, the United Nations promulgated the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the world was a very different place. The devastation of World War II was still evident and a new ominous Cold War was in its early stages. Protecting Human rights then largely meant protecting the rights of refugees. Today, at its 60th anniversary, the declaration is still vital and its mandate has vastly expanded. Amnesty International Director Larry Cox explains.
