Cooperation in the Arctic: 20 Years of Partnership between Greenland and the United States
Overview
On October 22, 2024, the Polar Institute held a live-streamed event with the US-Greenland Joint Committee, to discuss the importance of collaborative efforts to enhance economic ties, promote educational and cultural exchange, and foster scientific cooperation between the United States and Greenland. This event featured high-level discussions and practical case studies with distinguished participants, including Alan M. Leventhal, US Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, Kenneth Høegh, Head of Greenland Representation in Washington, DC, Tobias Rehfeld, Head of the Department for Arctic and North America, Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Sharon Hudson-Dean, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Northern European, Baltic, and Arctic Affairs.

Greenland's National Research Strategy 2022-2030
In 2023, the Government of Greenland announced its research strategy for 2022-30, aimed at strengthening Greenland’s research capacity as a tool for sustainable development, diversifying the country’s economy and tackling future challenges. The document was developed in cooperation with the Greenland Research Council and Greenland research institutions.
Facilitating increased engagement between the research communities of Greenland and the US
A two-day workshop was held 27-28 August 2018 at Pinngortitaleriffik (Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, GINR), in Nuuk, Greenland, during which participants from the US and Greenland research communities explored possibilities for strengthening US-Greenland collaborations. Participants set priorities for future work and funding related to: Research & Co-Production of Research, Public Outreach, and Education & Student Training. This workshop report captures many thoughtful, creative, and overwhelmingly enthusiastic ideas and recommendations for improving the way that the US and Greenland researchers collaborate on important Arctic projects.
