For more than a century the evolution of the Anglo-American economic "model" has involved major adaptations, especially in the deregulation of markets associated with the Reagan-Thatcher era. Volker Berghahn will explore the factors that brought about our present globalized system with its bewildering array of derivatives, our worries about financial firms too big to be allowed to fail, and our rediscovery of Keynesian ideas.
Volker Berghahn is the Seth Low Professor of History at Columbia University. He has written widely on modern German history, the American impact on European business and industry after World War II, and on debates between American and European social scientists about the future of industrial societies.
