WEBCAST: A Discussion With Pakistani Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan

As of early May, Pakistan had more than 20,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19--a smaller figure than that in some countries in the West and elsewhere, but one that has been rising for a number of weeks. Asad Majeed Khan, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States, will discuss Islamabad's response to the coronavirus pandemic. He will also offer his thoughts on US-Pakistan relations and on the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan.

About the Speakers

Dr. Asad Majeed Khan, a career Pakistan foreign service officer, assumed his current position as Pakistani ambassador to the United States in January 2019. During a diplomatic career spanning nearly three decades, Ambassador Khan's positions have included ambassador to Japan; director general (Americas) at Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and deputy chief of mission at the Pakistani embassy in Washington. He has also held senior diplomatic positions focused on West Asia, the United Nations, the Group of 77 (G77) nations, and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. Ambassador Khan earned his doctorate in international economic and business law (LLD) from Kyushu University in Japan.

Michael Kugelman is Asia Program deputy director and senior associate for South Asia at the Woodrow Wilson Center. He is responsible for research, programming, and publications on South Asia. His specialty areas include Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and U.S. relations with each of them. His recent projects have focused on India's foreign policy, U.S.-India relations, India-Pakistan relations, the war in Afghanistan, and U.S. policy in South Asia. He is a regular contributor to publications that include Foreign Policy, The National Interest, and CNN.com.
