Chair and Distinguished Fellow, H.E. Iván Duque Marquez, President of Colombia (2018-2022)
Through its Hemisphere of Prosperity and Freedom series, the Wilson Center aims to remind policymakers of the crucial importance of the Western Hemisphere for both the US and the world. It will also give new attention to both the challenges and opportunities the Hemisphere is facing.
Why Prosperity? The Hemisphere plays an integral role in fostering economic growth by harnessing private enterprise through strategic trade and investments opportunities.
Why Freedom? It is important to shine a spotlight on tyrannies in the region who continue to commit human rights abuses and atrocities. The Western Hemisphere can lead the international community in supporting democratic values, mitigating climate extremes, responding to human displacement, and strengthening our supply chains.
We believe that policymakers and policy influencers need to put a greater focus on the challenges and opportunities in our own hemisphere, investing financially, politically in a stronger and more vibrant Western Hemisphere. That should be among America’s highest priorities. —Ambassador Mark A. Green
“…an Initiative to highlight the values of democracy, freedom of speech, economic liberties and how the interaction of those principles guarantee that we are taking to a new orbit of debate what is much needed in the Americas.” —Former President of Colombia Iván Duque Márquez
