Full Biography

Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos has been a Member of the European Parliament since 1994, where he serves as a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights, the Subcommittee on Security and Defense, and as a Rapporteur of the European Parliament for Iraq. From 2004 to present he has served as Vice President of the Temporary Committee on the alleged use of European countries by the CIS for the transport and illegal detention of Prisoners.  From 1999 to 2004 he was the 2nd Vice President of the Parliament and from 1994 to 1999 he was the 1st Vice President of the Petitions Committee. Prior to that, he held various journalistic and teaching positions. Dimitrakopoulos has published articles as well as books on various topics such as the European Union, the war in Iraq, Mediterranean politics, and others. He received a BA degree in Public Law and Political Science from the University of Athens, an MA degree in International Affairs from American University, and completed postgraduate work in International Law and Diplomatic History at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
