    Full Biography

    Janet Elise Johnson is the Endowed Chair in Women’s and Gender Studies at Brooklyn College at the City University New York and a Professor of Political Science & Women’s/Gender Studies at the Brooklyn College and CUNY Graduate Center. Her books include The Gender of Informal Politics (2018), Gender Violence in Russia (2009), and Living Gender after Communism (2007). In the last few years, she has published articles in Slavic Review, Human Rights Review, Journal of Social Policy Studies, Politics & Gender, Perspectives on Politics, and Journal of Social Policy as well as online in The New Yorker, The Washington Post’s Monkey Cage, and The Boston Review.  She has had fellowships at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies in Germany, the Advanced Research Collaborative at CUNY, and the Aleksanteri Institute at the University of Helsinki and has won awards from the Social Science Research Council's Eurasia Program and the American-Scandinavian Foundation. Since 2008, she has been co-coordinator of the monthly workshop on Gender and Transformation: Europe at New York University. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies.
