"New Security Beat" Wins 2011 Global Media Award

Popular blog honored for leading-edge analysis on global environment and security issues, marking third time selected by Population Institute

The Wilson Center's award-winning environment blog New Security Beat has taken home another prize, winning the prestigious Global Media Award for Best Online Commentary or Blog. The win marks the third time the popular site has been honored with the award, which is conferred by the Population Institute.

Staffers Meaghan Parker, Schuyler Null, and Sean Peoples accepted the award on behalf of the Center's Environmental Change and Security Program, joining other distinguished winners that included the PBS NewsHour, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, and EarthSky radio. Also appearing at the Jan. 12 awards ceremony in New York City were United Nations Population Fund Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, winner for Best Editorial, and keynote addressee, the Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY).

Since January 2007, New Security Beat has offered nonpartisan analysis and thoughtful commentary on nontraditional security issues, including population growth, water scarcity, and environmental degradation.
