Wilson Center Mourns Passing of Vartan Gregorian

WASHINGTON – The Wilson Center mourns the loss of Carnegie Corporation President Vartan Gregorian. A lifelong historian, academic, philanthropist, and visionary, he was the embodiment of Carnegie's mission and a champion of the causes of education, immigration, and international peace and security. At Carnegie, Gregorian "focused the foundation's grant making on aiding the development of innovative ideas and transformative scholarship," awarding more than 10,000 grants totaling some $2.8 billion during his tenure.

"Vartan Gregorian was indeed a citizen of the world, as shown by his vast support of many Wilson Center programs and initiatives, said Ambassador Mark Green, Wilson Center President, Director, and CEO. "His generosity will be felt for generations after his passing, through research which bridges the gap between the world of ideas and the world of policy."

Some of the projects and initiatives which have been supported by Mr. Gregorian and the Carnegie Corporation of New York:

Africa Program:

  • Southern Voices Network for Peacebuilding.

Asia Program:

  • Wilson-China Fellowship.

Congressional Relations:

  • Foreign Policy Fellowship Program.
  •  International Relations Education Program.

History and Public Policy Program:

  • Arms Control & Regional Security (ACRS) Oral History Project.

Kennan Institute:

  • Special Initiative on Higher Education in the Former Soviet Union.
  • Foundations for US-Russia Engagement.
  • Mainstreaming Russia expertise in the United States.

"The Wilson Center community recognizes the legacy of Dr. Vartan Gregorian. His contributions to academia, public policy, and philanthropy have enriched the nonpartisan work of the Wilson Center," said Wilson Center Board Chair, Governor Bill Haslam. "We are incredibly grateful for his long-standing commitment."

The entire Wilson Center community extends its condolences to the Gregorian family.
