Out in Academia

Being an LGBTQI+ employee can bring a certain set of challenges in any workplace. As an academically-minded institution, this panel will explore the challenges of being "out in academia".

Date & Time

Thursday

1:00pm – 2:00pm ET

Overview

At the Wilson Center, we tout our evidence-based policy recommendations.  But the people behind that evidence and the structures they have to navigate are rarely interrogated. We intend to address the issue by gaining evidence from the over-represented populations that tend to dominate the highest levels of academia thus boxing out LGBTQI+ and other underrepresented voices, ideas, and experiences.

Alex Long, Program Associate for the Science and Technology Innovation Program (STIP) at the Wilson Center, will moderate this conversation with Dr. Bonnie Morris, Dr. Chole Schwenke, and Alexander Chee. They will discuss their respective experiences being out in academia. How have things changed for the LGBTQI+ community in academia over the course of their careers?

This event is part of the Wilson Center's celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month.
