A Reception in Honor of Representative Charles Rangel

On November 15, 2016, The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the African Union Mission to the United States hosted a special event to honor and recognize the service of the Honorable Charles Rangel (D-NY), upon his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives following 45 years of consecutive service.

Overview

On November 15, 2016, The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the African Union Mission to the United States hosted a special event to honor and recognize the service of the Honorable Charles Rangel (D-NY), upon his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives following 45 years of consecutive service. The event was attended by several members of Congress, senior African and U.S. officials, as well as many supporters and friends of Africa.  The speakers applauded Representative Rangel for invaluable contributions to the enduring partnership between the United States of America and Africa, and to the continent’s development and prosperity, including as one of the chief architects of the African Growth and Opportunity Act; his leadership on the Rangel Amendment which was key to the dismantlement of apartheid, his commitment to freedom and human rights, and his continuing efforts to strengthen U.S.-Africa relations. The African Union presented an award to Representative in honor of his contributions to the U.S.-Africa partnership.
