Smart Take | BRICS Summit 2023 Begins in South Africa
Over twenty countries have applied to join the BRICS group, which currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Oge Onubogu, Director of the Wilson Center’s Africa Program, discusses the significance of this possible increase in membership, why emerging economies are looking for a new platform, and what the BRICS 2023 agenda looks like. The Summit is taking place August 22-24 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Africa Program works to address the most critical issues facing Africa and U.S.-Africa relations, build mutually beneficial U.S.-Africa relations, and enhance knowledge and understanding about Africa in the United States. The Program achieves its mission through in-depth research and analyses, public discussion, working groups, and briefings that bring together policymakers, practitioners, and subject matter experts to analyze and offer practical options for tackling key challenges in Africa and in U.S.-Africa relations.
