Sharing the Air: EU and US Efforts to Integrate Commercial Drones into Civilian Airspace

Date & Time

Dec. 13, 2021
10:00am – 11:30am ET

Aviation is undergoing a technological revolution, from the proliferation of drones of all sizes designed for commercial use to the promise of new, innovative, highly automated aircraft to transport passengers and cargo, including electric and vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Government authorities are revising existing regulations and devising new ones to ensure that these new forms of flight can safely share the air with traditional airliners and smaller aircraft carrying people.

How can air traffic management (ATM) be integrated with unmanned air traffic management (UTM)? What new aviation rules for drones are already in place? What new rules are just over the horizon?

For answers, please join senior policymakers from U.S. and European aviation authorities, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington, D.C. and the Wilson Center’s Science and Technology Innovation Program (STIP) for a public conversation.

Global Europe Program

The Global Europe Program addresses vital issues affecting the European continent, US-European relations, and Europe’s ties with the rest of the world. We investigate European approaches to critical global issues: digital transformation, climate, migration, global governance. We also examine Europe’s relations with Russia and Eurasia, China and the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Our program activities cover a wide range of topics, from the role of NATO, the European Union and the OSCE to European energy security, trade disputes, challenges to democracy, and counter-terrorism. The Global Europe Program’s staff, scholars-in-residence, and Global Fellows participate in seminars, policy study groups, and international conferences to provide analytical recommendations to policy makers and the media.  Read more
