What Ukraine’s Candidate Status Means for the European Union

September 19, 202319:12

Baroness Cathy Ashton talks to Global Europe Director Robin Quinville about Ukraine’s future in the European Union. How will the European Union change over the next few years as it opens itself to Ukraine and other candidate countries? Will the next enlargement be a catalyst for EU internal reform? What will the EU look like in the coming decades?

Baroness Ashton was Vice President of the European Commission and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy from 2009–2014; she is now the Wilson Center’s Slater Family Distinguished Fellow.  Join us for a fascinating discussion on the EU of the future.

Global Europe Program

The Global Europe Program is focused on Europe’s capabilities, and how it engages on critical global issues.  We investigate European approaches to critical global issues. We examine Europe’s relations with Russia and Eurasia, China and the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Our initiatives include “Ukraine in Europe” – an examination of what it will take to make Ukraine’s European future a reality.  But we also examine the role of NATO, the European Union and the OSCE, Europe’s energy security, transatlantic trade disputes, and challenges to democracy. The Global Europe Program’s staff, scholars-in-residence, and Global Fellows participate in seminars, policy study groups, and international conferences to provide analytical recommendations to policy makers and the media.  Read more
