April 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Ahead of the NATO Summit in Washington in July, the Wilson Center is exploring the challenges, opportunities, and legacy of the most successful alliance in history.
As NATO leaders commemorate the alliance's 75th anniversary, key issues such as the 2% GDP defense spending pledge dominate discussions. Despite international pressures, Canada remains hesitant to significantly increase its defense budget. Dr. Christopher Sands examines factors such as Canadian negotiation traditions, political credibility on security issues, and a perceived sense of insularism that shapes Canadian policy to explain the ongoing debate surrounding Canada's commitment to NATO defense spending targets.
When senior officials from 32 countries meet in Washington, DC next week for the NATO Summit, deterrence and defense, as well as Ukraine and global partnerships, are at the top of the agenda. Under Secretary General Stoltenberg’s leadership, NATO has recognized that climate change is also reshaping the security landscape. In today’s episode of New Security Broadcast, Wilson Center Senior Fellow Sherri Goodman speaks with NATO’s Paul Rushton about the Alliance’s efforts to integrate climate security across its core priorities.
