CloseECSP at the Johannesburg Summit
Over 100 heads of state and government and over ten thousand delegates convened in Johannesburg, South Africa in late August and early September for the World Summit on Sustainable Development. And ECSP was there.
As part of the international Environment, Development, and Sustainable Peace Initiative, ECSP co-hosted a roundtable to facilitate dialogue among Southern and Northern perspectives on sustainable resource management, conflict prevention, and peace promotion. Key points emerging from the debate included:
causes of conflict and needs to shift towards mechanisms to promote
peace. Further attention needs to be given to environmental cooperation
as a tool for confidence building, looking at the specific mechanisms
and means to promote peace.
environmental conflicts in the South require a sustained integration of
Southern perspectives.
