Jennifer Turner, CEF Director Talks to CCTV America About Pollution Policies in China

With the hit of a popular smog documentary Under the Dome released in March, CCTV America interviewed Jennifer Turner, the director of China Environment Forum at the Woodrow Wilson Center, on China’s new pollution policies.

“Last year China amended their environmental pollution law… now they have fines that will grow day-by-day if an industry doesn’t stop pollution,” said Turner. “And there also requirements that local officials are now going to be evaluated by their environmental performance as opposed to just economic performance.” Also, she mentioned now Chinese NGOs can launch lawsuit if the pollution falls into a public interest case.

Director Turner also expected the public might see another “iron-hand” in the 13th Five-Year Plan to put out specific targets for the reduction of coal consumption in China. Beside investment in cleaner resources, such as renewables and natural gas, energy efficiency, according to Turner is also a game-changer of China’s reliance on coal.
