Online Harassment as a Form of Gender-Based Violence

To commemorate the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, Middle East Program Director Merissa Khurma spoke with four women experts and activists to understand how online harassment is a form of GBV.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. The Middle East Program presents a video blog series that explores how online harassment is an emerging form of violence against women. While the expansion of Internet connectivity and access to digital devices presents myriad opportunities to women's freedoms, such as the ability to gain employment or raise awareness to critical issues, it also opens the potential to unwarranted harassment.
