Managing the President's Message

July 9, 2011

Dr. Kumar is professor of political science at Towson University, and is one of the foremost authorities on coverage of the president and on the White House Communications Operation. She's the author and co-author of several books, including this newly updated one, "Managing the President's Message."

When it comes to news coverage, it's safe to say that the president of the United States is the most covered individual in the history of the press and mass media. Almost every statement from a president is news, and it's often international news. With that amount of scrutiny comes the opportunity to communicate a message, and the necessity to manage that message as it relates to furthering diplomatic or policy goals or other presidential priorities. In the modern era, the White House Communications Operation has become large, complex and central to any administration's prospects for success. This week on dialogue host John Milewski is joined by Martha Joynt Kumar. Scheduled for rebroadcast starting August 18th, 2010 on MHz Worldview channel.
