Mexican Presidential Candidate Series: A Conversation with Carlos Manuel Urzúa Macías

The Wilson Center’s Mexico Institute and the Atlantic Council's Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center are pleased to invite you to a conversation with Dr. Carlos Manuel Urzúa Macías on fiscal policy and economic development in Mexico. This event is the fourth in our 2018 election series featuring advisers to Mexico's top presidential candidates.

Dr. Carlos Manuel Urzúa Macías is a Professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) in Mexico City and an adviser to MORENA and presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He obtained a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Mathematics from ITESM and the National Polytechnic Institute, respectively. Dr. Urzúa also holds a master’s degree and a PhD in Economics from the University of Wisconsin. He belongs to the Mexican National System of Researchers and is the author of several books on economics and poetry. Dr. Urzúa’s research subjects range from the politics of public spending, taxes and economic competitiveness, fiscal federalism, poverty, among other. Furthermore, as an academic, he was founding director of the Graduate School of Public Administration at the ITESM in Mexico City from 2003 to 2013. He was a professor and a researcher at El Colegio de México from 1989 to 2000, and a visiting professor at Georgetown and Princeton University.

Previously, Mr. Urzúa served as Secretary of Finance of Mexico City from 2000 to 2003. In addition, Mr. Urzúa has been a consultant for the World Bank, the ECLAC, the UNDP, and the OECD. Moreover, he has consulted the private sector on international commerce.
