Branding the Exile as Outsider: Corporal Punishment in the Russian Exile System, 1828-1893

Project Summary

Examines the intersection of theories and practices of the law, judicial policies, the development of the Russian state and empire and the articulation of new views concerning class, gender and the body. Reviews how the Russian state routinely cut off the criminal from civic life in its practice of exiling criminals convicted of serious offenses to Siberia.
