Demonstrates that the six most powerful and original poets of the period (Blok, Khodasevich, Akhmatova, Pasternak, Mandel’stam, Tsvetaeva) are exemplary, not only of the general history of Russia during this period, but of the fate of the 1990s and on. ...___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Short-Term Grant Kennan Institute Expertise: Russia and Eurasia Affiliation: Independent Writer Wilson Center Project(s): Sir: Isaiah Berlin and Russia. A Literary Biography Term: Oct 31, 2000- Nov 30, 2000.Project Summary A literary biography of Sir Isaiah Berlin (1909-1997), centered chronologically on the war years of 1940-45 and thematically on Berlin’s relationship to Russia. Juxtaposes three hypotheses: Berlin’s realized destiny, his likely fate had he remained in Soviet Russia, or had he chosen to be part of the main body of Russians in emigration. Places Berlin at the crux of Russian and European/Western culture, both as a political and literary figure. Draws upon Naiman’s experience as a friend and colleague of Isaiah Berlin. ...
