Urbanization in Russia 1861-1914: Cross-cultural Interpretation

Project Summary

Asks: What are the similarities and distinctions between the social, economic, demographic development of the Russian city in 1861-1914 amd the cities of Western Europe? To what degree were the preconceptions and expectations for capitalist development established and realized in 1860? Was the Russian city an island of Western culture in the Russian countryside or an organic part of the same culture and similar to it in economic, demographic and social terms? Examines and answers these questions from an urbanist perspective.
