Russian Psychiatric Debates

Project Summary

examination of the theoretical and practical outlooks of forensic psychiatrists in late Imperial Russia, arguing that the dialogic interaction between the state and these professionals shaped processes of reform in contemporary Russia; the adaptation of scientific ideas within the Russian medical community, exploring the shift toward more biologically deterministic theories of human behavior, and relating this process to the autocratic culture in which forensic psychiatrists functioned.
