Reviews the work component of the social contract. Examines the historical precedent fo the Soviet ’employment contract.’ Queries what has happened to the Soviet period of employment contract in the wake of the collapse of the institutional structures? What factors are shaping a new understanding of employment? What extent to these factors reflect attitudes and coaltions of old? What extent have new political and economic forces become dominant?
