Jorge Giraldo Ramírez holds a Ph. D. in Philosophy (Political Philosophy). Currently, he is the Dean of the School of Sciences and Humanities at EAFIT University in Medellín, where he also works as a professor and researcher. His main academic work focuses on key themes in contemporary politics: political thought, civil war (including the Colombian case), organized crime and urban security. His books include Ciudadanía y derechos humanos sociales (2001), and Guerra civil posmoderna (2009). He has also edited Medellín, medioambiente, urbanismo, sociedad (2010), Economía criminal en Antioquia: narcotráfico (2011), and Informalidad e ilegalidad en la explotación del oro y la madera en Antioquia (2012). He is a weekly columnist for the Colombian newspaper El Colombiano.
