accumulate statistical data on economic performance from national statistical agencies; compare the influence of the credibility of state institutions on the dependent variables, the extent of political and economic turmoil in each of the newly independent states; study of factors that shape differentiation as the former republics become states under conditions of macroeconomic and political crisis; examination of different degrees of success of former Soviet states in the transition to democratic and market systems
