Russian Historical Mythology

Project Summary

Studies the evolution of Russian historical mythology, including: the Russian Reconquista (gathering of the Russian lands), the notion that Muscovite princes reconquered ancient Russian territories; the Russian Crusade (the Tartar yoke); The Russian Mission (Moscow, the third Rome). Locates the ideas that consitute the creation myth and traces their impact on Russian domestic and international policy from 1500 to the present.
