Full Biography

Michael Camilleri is the director of the Peter D. Bell Rule of Law Program at the Inter-American Dialogue. He is an international lawyer and former diplomat who served in the Obama administration as the National Security Council’s Director of Andean Affairs, and as a member of Secretary of State Clinton’s and Kerry’s Policy Planning Staff. Before his tenure in government, he was a human rights specialist at the Organization of American States, and a senior staff attorney at the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL).. He has also been an adjunct professor of law and international affairs at the George Washington University, American University, and the University of Baltimore. Mr. Camilleri graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor’s degree in history, and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and co-founder of the Americas expert group at the Truman National Security Project.
