monograph on the history of Russia’s southern frontier in Rus’, Muscovy, and Russia spanning a millenium from the 9th to the 19th centuries, suggesting that the presence of a dynamic southern frontier with its nomadic inhabitants played a crucial role in the formation of the Kievan-Muscovite-Russian state and contributed in no sma ll degree to its highly-centralized character impact of the southern frontier on the social, economic, and political institutions in Russia
