Government Spending, Credit Market Conditions and Economic Activity in a Sub-Saharan African Economy Context
Project Summary
The importance of government spending as a fiscal instrument for providing fiscal stimulus in various episodes of stunted growth experienced around the world, particularly after significant recessions, attests to its significance to policymakers. COVID-19, for example, has recently resulted in a series of lock-down measures that have effectively halted economic activity in some sectors while significantly affecting economic activity in others. The job losses and bankruptcies that have occurred have impacted millions of people around the world. As a result, a number of countries around the world, including those in sub-Saharan Africa, enacted fiscal policies to counteract the pandemic's effects. Apart from that, during recessions, credit markets tend to stall, with credit availability reducing and credit costs rising. Therefore, the main empirical research issue for this project will be: how effective are discretionary government spending measures in stimulating the economy across credit cycles in a sub-Saharan African economy context.
