Seeking Civil Society: The Formation of Environmental NGOs in the Caspian Region

Project Summary

Explores the Caspian Sea basin in terms of ’ownership’ after the collapse of the Soviet Union, heightened interest in oil exploration and exploitation, and environmental concerns. Discusses the ways that these interests combine to make environmental organizations participants in civil society building, and democratic transition. Also looks at how their activities strengthen women’s roles in society.
