Project Summary

Complements extant studies of the estate economy, describing the evolution of Russian estate culture and comparing it with that of Western Europe. Asserts that the estate is a paradigm for the process of cultural Westernization among Russian elite. Considers the material culture of the estate, entertainment and family life, estate household, relations between lord and serf, elite attitudes towards estate life, and the estate’s impact on the cultural development of provincial Russia.
