The Westernist and Asianist in the Russian Diplomatic Service, 1880-1914

Project Summary

Investigation of the hypothesis that the Imperial Russian foreign service was split between Europeanist and Asianists, who tended to view problems with different experiences and needs. Determines the extent to which a Europe-Asia divide might have existed over three periods: the Tsarist Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the People’s Commissariat for Foreign Affairs, 1917-1937, and the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs after World War II.
