The Literary Caucasus in Ninetheenth-Century Russia: A Study of Belles-Lettres and Imperialism

Project Summary

A study of the belles lettres as they related to and relate information on imperial expansion into the Caucasus. A review of a major episode of ’Ornamentalism’, exploring cultural myths and imperialist ideology. Examines civilizing missions to Muslim countries as are conveyed in literary texts. Layton contends that a fuller pictured of the imperialist mentality can be assembled from the spectrum of literature of the time frame -- including its ’pure trash.’ Continues research from visiting grant (1985).
