Project Summary

Examines the impact of Latin American literature on the Soviet Union. Follows its initial condemnation (for its modernist techniques), to its praise for presenting proper historical perspective, its socialist realism. Defines the Soviet reception from 1976-1986, measures the extent to which the Soviet debate impacted the larger debate on modernism, and the extent that Latin American literature has influenced contemporary Soviet literature.
