YAN Xuetong

    Full Biography

    Yan Xuetong currently serves as the Director of the Institute of International Studies, Tsinghua University. His books include American Hegemony and China’s Security (2000) and Analysis of China’s National Interests (1996; recipient of the 1998 China Book Prize). He is the editor of numerous books including Pre-Qin Chinese Thoughts on Foreign Relations (2008), and The Rise of China and Its Strategy (2005). He is also the author of numerous papers and articles on international relations. Yan was named one of the world’s Top 100 public intellectuals by Foreign Policy in 2008. Dr. Yan received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, and M.A. in international relations from the Institute of International Relations in 1986 and a B.A. in English from Heilongjiang University in 1982. Dr. Yan’s new book, A Comparative Study of Pre-Qin Political Philosophy, in which he addresses the question of what pre-Qin philosophy has to say about China’s rise, was published by the Princeton University Press.
