Overview

President Guillermo Lasso’s White House meeting with President Biden on Monday comes on the heels of the U.S.-Ecuador Partnership Act’s inclusion in the National Defense Authorization Act. The legislation and the presidential visit reflect the depth and breadth of the bilateral relationship, including the two countries’ shared interest in bolstering democracy during this time of democratic backsliding in the Americas.

The U.S.-Ecuador Partnership Act marks the first time in the history of the U.S. Congress that legislation has been approved that is dedicated solely to the U.S.-Ecuador relationship. This legislation will increase U.S. cooperation with the government of Ecuador on initiatives that expand bilateral economic and commercial ties, advance inclusive economic development, deepen security and law enforcement assistance, support democracy, the rule of law and human rights, and strengthen environmental protection.

The Inter-American Dialogue, the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center at the Atlantic Council, the Wilson Center Latin American Program, and the Center for Strategic International Studies Americas Program are pleased to welcome President Lasso for a discussion on the next steps to advance U.S.-Ecuador relations, as well as on the outlook for democracy in the Western Hemisphere.

Please note that this event will be held in Spanish.
